Heroes: The Blood Angels Come home

John and I were finally able to finish up our part of the Heroes of Armageddon Charity Drive. The winner of the Blood Angels army, Peter Dean, lives in Oakland and we agreed to meet halfway between Santa Cruz and Oakland: GameKastle in San Jose (the BEST game store in the Bay Area I think). Anyway, we were kindly allowed to set up the entire army and await Peter. Here is another quick overview:

We are very proud to announce that these armies have raised $31,657 for Doctors without Borders

Friends,

the wait is over. The Heroes of Armageddon project started in April and now, almost 4 months later, we have accomplished what we set out to do: 4 armies modeled and painted to the highest standards. We have here the true Heroes of Armageddon: the Steel Legion and Blood Angels opposite Ghazghkull Thraka's Horde and the Wazdakka Gutsmek's Speed Freaks.

From the start of this project, we have tried to stay close to the 3000 point goal, but as you will see, some armies are bigger, some are smaller. All in all, it has been a tremendous effort, having models come from all over the American continent, from Hawaii to Canada to Virginia.

We have done this to raise money for Doctors without Borders, an organisation that sends their people out into the most dangerous places on earth, to help the helpless and try to keep them alive and healthy. They need support and our incredible gaming community has stepped up to the plate. This sunday we will reveal the total amount raised, which will be very exciting. After that the armies will travel to Games Day in Chicago on July 30th to be displayed on a custom built 6x8 foot gaming table, built by Brian Niro from Gentleman's Ones.

All the miniatures for the four armies are on resin bases donated and shipped by Secret Weapon Miniatures and Dragon Forge Design. Both owners Justin and Jeff also built models for the Steel Legion army.

NOW let's have a closer look at the armies. We have set up individual pages for each of the armies with large, detailed photos and all the names of the people responsible, please check it out and leave comments. I am sure everyone will be delighted to hear from you all

This coming Sunday, the 24th, we will draw FOUR winners, one for each army.

In addition to the models, there are extra prizes for the winners:

Each army will come in the amazing Battle Foam PACK1520 XL protective carrying case

Each army will also get one of these amazing custom sculpted and super limited life sized Purity Seal / Icons with litanies master sculpted by Rob Ellis II aka -Q- and donated by The Bolter and Chainsword.

Gale Force Nine created custom templates for the armies, with four different colors.

Each winner will get a dozen unique dice, designed just for their new army and made by Chessex.

Santa Cruz Warhammer has become more than just a local blog, but sometimes we just have to give you some local news.

Mike and I are plugging away on the Ork Goff army, and it is coming together beautifully. We have many talented and hardworking painters involved and also some new and young talent: Mike's whole family has been pitching in to get ork boys painted, including some basecoat painting by his daughters at 10 cts a model..generous!

The local guys from the Santa Cruz Warhammer gaming club have taken on models and we had a fun painting party last week, we were also very lucky to have a Stompa donated to the project by our local gaming store Game Alot.

Game Alot has been a fixture in Santa Cruz for longer than I can remember. I played my first game there and bought my first mini from them what must have been a million years ago. Frank and Stephanie are great people and have a genuine love of games. Not only can you find just about any type of gaming need you can think of, but Game Alot is the only place in the city of Santa Cruz to buy GW products. The GW manager for the store is Ross and here he is with the Stompa he built and was able to give to us, check out Ross' blog for more stompas work. If you find your self in the area, make sure to drop in and visit at 835 Front St, ask about Saturday game days and the discount punch cards.

a while ago Joel Jameson won this fantastic mini, painted by German master Simon M, who had graciously donated it to the weekly prize pot for Heroes of Armageddon. Last week Joel emailed me, saying that he wanted to give something back to Heroes of Armageddon. He came in to the posession of a wonderful Lord Dante and to draw in more donations, Joel is returning the favor and give it away to one happy supporter of our project. Ghaz is coming soon.....

The Santa Cruz Warhammer Game Night group came together last friday for about 5 hours and helped John and I painting the 4th army for the Heroes of Armageddon. We made lots of progress and one of the things that made a huge difference was the painting of 100 bases by Glenn and Tony. Here's a shot of that evening.

John is going to paint the two battlewagons, he will post later this week about that. Michael and Scott took responsibility for the Killa Kans and Tony took the heli choppas home for a nice finish. John and I are blessed to have great painters and hard workers at the same time that we can call friends. Michael also graciously donated a boxset of 5 nobz to the cause which John will paint up.

Last but not least we are working on 5 meganobz and 1 stompa. More about that stuff later in the week.

I myself decided to paint all the boyz for this army, there are 84 and 4 nobz. I finished up 40 of them over the weekend and I gave them all a distinctive color, just for fun but also a little bit to make it easy to identify the squads. Here are the 4 squads done, although my wife has promised to ULTRA fine tune all these models. She has great skills for fine painting work.

Today in a week all the armies will be done and showcased on the Heroes of Armageddon blog! WOW.

Tom Shadle sent in these pictures of the finished Dante model. As you may know, the dude has won like a small community of Demons. Well, he did not fail to impress with Dante. I will let the pictures talk for me from here.

You are in the presence of greatness. I am truly humbled. I originally suggested he make a conversion and he answered "But I use Dante to convert other models!" Ok then! I at least talked him into using one of the awesome winged jump packs from the Sanguinary Guard. They make Dante look even better.

Dante will be leading the rest of the Blood Angels into Gamesday to be awarded to one lucky winner. All you have to do to be eligible to win is donate. Check MY BLOG on Friday for pics of the rest of the army.

First images of the Fourth Army and the building of TWO unique Battlewagons!

We haven't published ANY pictures of the FOURTH army that will be given away in 3 weeks for the Heroes of Armageddon Charity Drive. That's because it hasn't been painted yet....but now we will get out act together and do it...in two weeks. We have all been too busy with other stuff but now it is time to get cracking on this one. And it will be a beautiful, monstrous Ork Mek/Horde Army. ALL the models have been donated by Spikey Bits/FTW Games, a huge donation of models. Here is the first image of this army, some of it in the early stages of painting.

We have 84 warriors, 4 nobs, 1 deffdred, 6 killakans, 3 trukks, 2 battlewagons AND 3 helichoppas. That amounts up to about 1950 points. On top of that, Mr. Esty will paint a Stompa, Mathieu Fontaine will paint Ghazghull Thraka and we will fill out the remainder with some elite options...this army will be HUGE.

On to the OTHER ork army, The Speed Freeks, led by Goatboy. John and I got the honor of painting up one battlewagon each. We both built and painted the model in ONE 24 hour period. Here's the report:

Ok here I go,

As Mike said, we got together for a kitbashing and knocked out a few Battlewagons.

I really like the new GW Battle wagon, but if you have more than one in your army I think they just look too much alike, I really doubt Orks are going to build up a group of matching rigs with a bunch of scrap metal, so why not bash one up yourself and have some fun with it? Orks is a great army for kit bashing, and whatever you make it will be good and orky.

I had an Idea in my head of what I was going for, a big rig that when you look at it you think "yeah, Battlewagon" so I knocked it together with a bunch of old model kit stuff and just enough GW bits to make it fit in. I made a footprint of folded paper and I kept checking to make sure it fit in the footprint.

I made the Deathrolla and gunner removable so it fits nicely in the bag.

well there it is!

I hope it brings the winner of the Speed Freaks Army lots of luck.

Death Company Storm Raven, Part 5: the finished model!

I finally was able to finish the Death Company Storm Raven for the Heroes of Armageddon Project. Here are the images:

Here's the full shot with the front door open. I painted the entire interior but nothing of it will show, except the front part. it's a matter of principle for me, but still a bit disappointing that this model lets very little light in when the hatches are open.

The wings are magnetized, so this model transports easily

The engine goes from silver to brown to black, which looks nice.

Heroes Prize: 10 Troll Forged Miniature Chem Soldiers!

A while back I was browing Table Top Fix, when my eye fell on these minis:

Troll Forged is a community of amateur sculptors who all post their work on their own forum. Readers can comment on the sculpts, after which the best ones get molded and cast. They are put up for sale on their store and each sale gives the sculptor a commission, which never ends. In this way sculptors can keep reinvesting time and money to get better and keep at it. The brain behind this group is Ed Fortae, who is the sole caster. I thought it was all too good to be true and I sent him an email, requesting some of those Chemsoldiers, which would make great IG troopers.

Hm...it took about an hour before Ed emailed me back and said, YES of course I will give some models for the cause and he sent me 10 Chemsoldiers which we are now giving away for Heroes of Armageddon!

This week I received some wonderful prizes in the mail: two hardbound Cool Mini or Not Annuals with the best models of 2009. The book came out a few months ago and I actually ordered on for myself when it came out. It was the best 35 dollars I spent in a long time. The book is inspiring and the paintwork is mind blowing and it made me excited to try out all kinds of new models and paint styles. I asked Travis from CMON if they would want to help out with the Heroes Project and he gladly obliged. We have TWO books to give away. Here are some views:

The secret member of Heroes of Armageddon....

We have told you all about the four team leaders building up the 4 armies of Heroes of Armageddon:

But we have one other surprise up our sleeve: a custom built gaming table, a table that will be worthy of hosting 12000 amazingly painted models during Games Day in Chicago on July 30 this year.

I asked Brian from A Gentleman's Ones if he would do it, since his tables are amazing and the Adepticon one this year was absolutely GREAT.

He said YES. And he lives in Chicago...

I asked Brian to share some thoughts on things: building tables, life, charity and whatever....i suggest you read the whole thing. I added pictures of his work in between..ENJOY!

Brian "Gentlemans Ones" Niro:

"As the fifth ~~Beatle~~ teamleader of the Heroes of Armageddon project (the one in charge of the tables upon which these forces will be displayed), I admit that my role in all of this may seem modestly marginal or, at worst, completely tangential. The armies are going to be glorious; however, with an event so concretely and historically situated, I am pleased that the HoA team felt compelled to go in for both penny and pound, and to create a suitably ambitious space in which to situate these four massive armies…

Tables. Massive Tables:

That is where I come in. Generally speaking when considering terrain, the casual hobbyist aims for a place, suitably atmospheric, in which vying armies might collide. What is undeniably both challenging and tremendous in the Heroes of Armageddon project is that the tables must evoke the place where these armies fought so desperately. The distinction is subtle, but superlatively important.

Since I was very small, I have been drawn to the 40K universe not only for the dynamic modeling potential of the figures, but also for the expansive complexity of that universe itself. Once upon a time, I stared for hours and hours at the images lurking across the various 40K-related rulebooks and whatnot –the cityscapes, the dark corridors, the gloomy bulkheads, and so on. These days, I consume Black Library material voraciously, but the idea is the same. I like to get lost in the astonishingly complex layers to this reality.

As such, the four individual Heroes of Armageddon tables are an ideal space in which to invoke that narrative, a narrative that must be relevant to the individual army it displays, that must be directly evocative of the larger Armageddon narrative, and must work in conjunction with the other tables to create a single, playable space. The tables must flesh out the reality of this historical moment, and yet stay subtle enough to remain a scenic display, and not the point itself. This is a wild challenge, and (if I may be candid) one that I am up to.

My Curriculum Vitae:

Scenery of this nature has been an integral component of my hobby interest for years now; however, the most ambitious project that I have undertaken to date came to fruition this year at AdeptiCon. Those of you that made it to AdeptiCon and/or those that follow such matters on the web may have noticed the six individual tables that I created earlier this year.

These tables were assembled to host a Special Operations: Killzone event (a fan-based skirmish dynamic inspired by the Kill Teams scenario in the Battle Missions supplement and created by Big Jim from Galaxy in Flames).

In all, there were six 4’x4’ contiguous tables, which means that this was, in fact, a single 4’x24’ table (pictured here). That is 94 square feet of conjoined gaming glory.

…dramatic pause…

At this point, I should mention that I am a teacher and will have part of June and all of July free from the more mundane stresses of “life” and adulthood, and expect to squander my hobby time on little else but the HoA tables. The weather should be more accommodating than October-March were here in Chicago. As such, I will be quite pleased to be able to work in the open air (did I just jinx that?) rather than my crusty garage for this project.

And before I sound to self-aggrandizing, I should note that my first crack at the AdeptiCon tables was a disaster (you can find some early posts on my blog from late Autumn of last year). I learned, basically, how not to build tables of this stature. Of course, the learning did not stop there.

The second effort, the one you see here, taught me a decent lesson about what I can reasonably expect from the materials, and what parts of the envelope I can still press further. Although I am really quite chuffed with the results for the AdeptiCon tables, I fully intend to make several significant advances, to raise my game by several giant steps, for the HoA tables. After all, it would be rude not to.

Of course, if my trusty companion and carpentry mentor, Tall Paul, has his way, the HoA tables will require their own utility bill –gas, running water, electricity, cable television, telephone, the works. I suspect we will settle for a touch of electricity, but more on that soon enough.

Perhaps the first most relevant lesson we learned concerns the assemblage of contiguous tables that must both interact and stand alone: both in terms of the carpentry challenges, and in terms of the thematic evolution of one table to the next.

And on that note, I will tell you that the preliminary sketches and imaginative drawings are nearing completion; soon it will be time to get the saws spinning once more…

I cannot wait.

Because I can:

--that statement is the simplest answer to the question “why do you want to contribute to this charitable endeavor?” At the end of the day, I do not believe there need be more reason to give to such a worthwhile and significant cause as we find in Doctors Without Borders. I encourage anyone reading to genuinely consider the incredible benefit a simple donation provides for some other human being in, quite often desperate, need.

And yet, the charitable disposition of this project makes it a win-win opportunity not only to feel that one’s work has meaning, purpose, and beneficial relevance in the real world, but also to work in a manner that is entirely more ambitious and grand than might normally be possible. I cannot imagine another scenario in which I could take up the challenge of building a table for 12,000 points of masterfully painted figures. To be candid, I am not even certain I know what 12,000 points will look like all in one place –as it is about twice as large as the most ambitious game of Apocalypse I which I have ever participated.

Of course, there is a third layer to all of this. Although aware that the blind luck of my vicinity to the event had a large part in the selection process, I am nevertheless one measure honored and one measure flattered to get the nod on this assignment because of the other people participating, including some absolute legends from across the hobby, the planet, and the internets."

Heroes of Armageddon: Meet the Artist and his Art

We started the Heroes of Armageddon last week and the response has been overwhelming. Not only have lots of generous people donated, countless blogs have also added links and talked about it and I have received so many emails with offers of help or other donations. Thanks all.

This week will feature the first prize of this drive. On Thursday we will give away two METAL 12x16 prints of the amazing artwork. The prints, valued at 80 dollars each will be TWO of TWO and will not be made available publicly anymore. Shipping to anywhere will be included. This wonderful donation comes from the company that I work for: www.bayphoto.com, the best photolab in the country.

But before we get to the prize drawing this Thursday, I want you all to meet the amazing artist who created the art! Here is an interview I did with Chris Miller, the one talent who doesn't work in the art department of GW.

When we asked you for the Armageddon artwork, what was your first response?

Originally I had been requested to do some artwork for the Storm Wardens project by my good friend Mik over at Mik's Minis and I was more than eager to do further work for another great cause. I just hoped that I could provide the look and feel that was being asked for.

What material did you use for your research?

I gathered a pile of imagery of both Yarrick and Ghazghkull for use as reference while I sketched out the original rough copy. I pulled out my copy of the Ork codex for some green-skinned inspiration.

How do you make this artwork?

I sketch the image in a 11x14 sketchbook using a blue prismacolor pencil (a habit I picked up from my animation courses). Then I will scan it into Photoshop and go over the original sketch using a Wacom tablet. From here I will overlay a clean line drawing and color it in.

Dayjob? Wife? Kids? Education in the arts or self taught?

Actually I am currently planning for my wedding in July to my lovely fiancé of five years. We are sans-children at this time, unless you count our two dogs. We met while in college; I graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Animation. I also have a degree in Graphic Design. My current job does not make use of my degrees but I definitely do not let that stop me from having an outlet for myself artistically. It is rare to see me without one of many sketchbooks in hand or the thought of my next project in mind.

Have you done artwork for other sites?

I have been commissioned for a number of pieces for other sites over the past year, hugely in part to the encouragement of my friends from Minions of the Monster Master -Thanks Guys- I am always trying to get some artwork completed for the Minions Blogcast. Recently I did the banner piece for the blog My Dice Hate Me! (mydicehateme.blogspot.com). I did the logo for the Barter Bucket at Santa Cruz Warhammer.

Do you play 40k yourself?

I have actually only played a few games of official 40k tabletop war gaming. However I have amassed quite a few models from Games Workshop’s miniatures wargames. When I do play, I favor the Space Orks of the 41^st Millenium, I find an insurmountable amount of charm in playing the primitive minded, destruction craving, and dakka-wielding greenies of the future. I enjoy the aspect of playing them so much so that I am looking to get some Gorkamorka mobs tableside in the near future. Additionally I have had quite a bit of fun playing in the 40k universe via the Fantasy Flight Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader, and Deathwatch RPGs with the gang over at Minions of the Monster Master.

Do you paint your own models?

Of course! At the moment I’ve got a sizable queue of paint jobs awaiting me for the summer ranging from 40K to Fantasy, we’ll see how far I get…

In the last 4 months our world has seen some extraordinary disasters, both natural and manmade. The people in the Middle East and Africa have been battling their governments and each other for a different and hopefully better future. Many people are dying and being injured today in Lybia, the Ivory Coast, Syria and in many other places as well.

The tsunami that hit Japan...seeing the footage of that wave gave me the chills and I have not been able to revisit it, realizing how much carnage and hardship this wave caused...

Storm Wardens

We cannot change any of these things by ourselves. But we can help support organizations that go to Africa and Japan and the whole world to help people in need, people that risk their own lives to better the life of a stranger. One of these groups is Doctor without Borders. An amazing organization you can check out their news feed here.

DWB go to places that most organizations have left behind and try against odds to fulfill their oath: to help people in need.

And they need money. And thats where we come in...last year with your help the Storm Wardens Project raised over 16,000 dollars for this amazing charity. Here's the link, the page is still up.

This was all YOUR success. We just opened up a PayPal account and built 2500 points of models, you all showed that our community can come together and do something amazing.

Well, this year the world seems way worse off and we have decided to do another Charity Project:

Heroes of Armageddon

John and I thought it better to raise the stakes and create a much larger project: we're giving away FOUR 3000 point armies. We hope that you will all pitch in and let your heart speak. This is the change we all can make, instead of ignoring the news.

How does it work?

Every dollar of your support gives you a chance to be one of the lucky four new army winners at the end of this drive.10 dollar contribution =10 chances to win. 100 dollars = 100 chances...you get the idea.

At the end of the drive, in July, we will choose the winners.

Then, the armies will travel to Games Day in Chicago, where they will be displayed. After that the winners can take their army home or we send it off.

In short: the more you contribute, the better your chances. More importantly, the more you contribute, the more you help to make the world a better place.

Heroes of Armageddon

Our Games Day Diorama will depict the 3rd battle of Armageddon with 4 armies: Steel Legion, Blood Angels, Ork Hordes and Speed Freaks.

We have expanded the all star build team from last year with a handful of Golden Demon winners and we also hope to go bigger and better by reaching out to more of you and the industry and collecting even more than we did last year for Doctors Without Borders.

These four Team Leaders have commited to finishing up these armies to the highest standards. We have also been able to lock down some Golden Demon winners to paint the centerpieces of the armies and have created a larger build team, all of which are great artists who have donated their time and effort to this cause.
